What are my Scrapbooking & Art Project Options?

There are so many options in the world of digital scrapbooking. Hardbound books, wrapped canvas wall art, individual scrap pages for adding to your existing scrapbooks, even projects like custom recipe books, greeting cards and playing cards!

There are a variety of sized hardbound scrapbook options, from small 5×5 to the largest at 11×13. There are several sizes of canvas, in both regular and deep wrap, from 8×8 to 18×24. You can create post-bound albums (like a true scrapbook) and you can create individual scrapbook pages for placing into an existing scrapbook, or adding pages as time goes by. How Do I Create A Digital Scrapbook?

The key to designing and publishing all these products is online software called Heritage Studio. You can create a free account and start looking at the art and templates right now.

Heritage Studio is easy to learn digital scrapbooking software that we think has the right balance between being intuitive, and having enough powerful features for advanced users. The great news is that it’s easy for beginners to use. And for advanced users, such as those who use Photoshop for their page layouts, Heritage Makers can become your personal publishing system for your individual pages (without needing to pay for Heritage Makers art collections, if you get artwork from elsewhere).

Also, Heritage Studio has the benefits of storing your photos securely online (free up to 2GB worth, unlimited with the Premier account). It is Internet-based with access from any computer, so you have no software to pay for or download. It’s also great as an all-in-one system, from design and layout, to art collections, to publishing directly from the system.

Digital Scrapbooking in general is also great because if you want multiple copies you don’t have to re-make every book over by hand.

How Is This Free?

To get started with online digital scrapbooking, your Basic account is free, and the software is free. You end up paying for your products in two ways. First, you pay (obviously) for any books or art that you publish. You pay through “publishing points”, where 1 Point = $1 to make it simple. But, they are always having specials where you can buy groups of Points for less than $1 each, for example 55 points for $50, or on a larger scale, up to 310 points for $200.

The second way you pay is actually optional, and it is through access to their Premier art collection. This is a subscription-based service where you can buy 1 month, 3 months, or 12 months at a time. One month retail is $19.95, and 12 months is only $8/mo. They also have a “Club HM” which is where you get free Premier subscription plus a certain number of points each month. This is the best option for hobbyists!

It is NOT necessary to have access to Premier art collection to publish books. There is a Basic account and it is FREE. However…as most people will tell you…you get what you pay for. Of course, most of the really cute embellishments, the most elegant papers, etc, are in the Premier collection. To scrapbooking hobbyists who are used to visiting the art store to purchase supplies, paper, and art, you probably don’t remember the last time you only spent $8 a month on scrapbooking! So even the best collection really is not expensive. The greatest thing about Premiere is that the art collection grows every month, but the price doesn’t go up. They have all their new holiday collections in, and in January they’ll have new Valentine’s Day collections in, and so on. I personally love the fact that all the art is searchable, otherwise it could get overwhelming. Like a Costco filled with scrapbooking art!

Digital Scrapbooking Do-It-Yourself…Or Not

If you are comfortable with the software, the best way is to start with a template and customize it to your liking. In this way you can do your own personal publishing of all kinds of things, from one-time book projects to annual Christmas cards. This is a true do-it-yourself option where you only pay for your book, and optionally to the “super cool” newest art collections.

(Hint: Your account comes with a cool greeting card feature called “Send Direct”. For 60 cents per card, only 16 cents more than a postage stamp, you can type in your recipients address(es) and Heritage Makers will mail the cards directly. Just blink and your holiday cards will be done. How cool is that?)

We also organize regular events (or you can, in your area) called “Digi-Crops”. (Don’t ask me why they call it this, but they are FUN!). Basically it is a bunch of women getting together to all work on their digital scrapbooking projects in a community environment. Often it’s in someone’s home, sometimes it is somewhere bigger like a church or community center. It is a really fun afternoon or evening where you get tons of creative energy flowing and help when you feel bogged down or stuck (plus lots of great NEW ideas). Of course, goodies should be included…from potluck lunch to wine and cheese to brownies and milk. I’m sure you’re getting the idea.

The third option is to have us help you with your project. This is a great option for super-busy people, whose stories otherwise wouldn’t get published. Your job, if you hire us to create your book, is to help pick a template, or at least a theme, get us the best photos, write captions with the photos and other story details we might need, and then go on with your busy life while we take care of book creation and publishing for you.

Starting from a template is MUCH more cost-effective than starting from scratch, so you’ll want to have a look at the templates. We can recommend some popular ones also.

This is a 1-2 hour workshop, kind of like a Pampered Chef thing. You invite your friends and family, and one of our team will come to introduce the company, play a game with photo stories, talk about project options, and give a demo of Heritage Studio software.

Optionally, we can have a “Digi Crop” (described above) directly after our Digital Scrapbooking workshop. This is a chance for people to start working on projects immediately after they order them! Folks will need to bring their own laptop, and family photos (preferably in digital form, but we can scan them right there if they are paper).
